Why Your Skin Feels Rough (And Why More Exfoliation Isn't the Answer)

One of the most common concerns I hear during the summer is,

"My skin just feels rough."

Guests often describe their skin as dry, textured, or like it has tiny bumps that weren't there a few weeks ago. Naturally, many people assume their skin is simply dry from spending more time in the sun, so they begin exfoliating more often.

Ironically, that's usually the opposite of what their skin actually needs.

What I See in My Treatment Room

After nearly twenty years of treating skin, I've learned that I can often tell the difference between dehydration and buildup simply by feeling someone's skin.

Most of the time, what feels like dryness isn't actually dry skin at all.

It's buildup.

Throughout the summer, your skin collects layers of sunscreen, sweat, oil, makeup, and environmental debris. Even with a good skincare routine, those layers can gradually build up, leaving your skin feeling rough, congested, and lacking its usual glow.

The good news?

Your skin doesn't necessarily need more products.

It simply needs the buildup professionally removed and a consistent routine at home.

The Biggest Mistake I See

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to "scrub away" the texture.

When skin feels rough, the natural reaction is to exfoliate every day or reach for a stronger scrub.

Unfortunately, over-exfoliating often creates an entirely new problem.

Your skin has a protective barrier that's responsible for keeping moisture in and irritation out. When we exfoliate too frequently, that barrier begins to weaken.

One of the first signs is that products suddenly begin to sting or burn when you apply them. Your skin may become red, irritated, or feel even drier than before.

At that point, your skin isn't asking for another exfoliating treatment.

It's asking for a chance to heal.

So How Often Should You Exfoliate?

For most healthy skin types, I recommend exfoliating two to three times per week.

The easiest way to stay consistent is to pick specific days.

For example:

• Tuesday & Thursday

or

• Monday, Wednesday & Friday

Having designated exfoliation days removes the guesswork and makes your routine much easier to follow.

Acne-prone skin is a little different.

The type of exfoliation and how often you should exfoliate depends entirely on the type of acne you're experiencing. That's why I always recommend a professional consultation before changing your routine if you're struggling with breakouts.

Choosing the Right Type of Exfoliation

Not all exfoliants are created equal.

For gentle physical exfoliation, I really like Rice Bran Extract because it effectively removes surface buildup without being overly harsh.

For chemical exfoliation, Glycolic Acid is one of my favorites because it can be incredibly effective while still being gentle when used correctly. I also love ingredients like Mandelic Acid and various fruit enzymes depending on the person's skin concerns.

The important thing isn't choosing the strongest exfoliant.

It's choosing the right one for your skin.

Healthy Skin Isn't About Doing More

One of the philosophies we live by at Nourish is that healthy skin doesn't come from layering more and more products onto your face.

It comes from creating healthy skin that can actually absorb and benefit from the products you're already using.

Sometimes the answer isn't adding another step.

It's simplifying your routine, staying consistent, and allowing your skin to do what it was designed to do.

Your skin doesn't need perfection.

It simply needs thoughtful, consistent care.

✨ Kenna's Professional Tip

If your skin suddenly starts feeling rough during the summer, resist the urge to exfoliate every day.

Instead, focus on cleansing your skin thoroughly every evening, staying hydrated, and exfoliating just two to three times each week.

Consistency almost always produces better results than overdoing it.
