Are You Actually Washing Your Face Well Enough?
When I ask a new guest about their skincare routine, one of the first questions I ask is,
"Tell me a little about your skin and what you're currently using."
That simple question tells me so much.
It helps me understand how your skin behaves, what concerns you've struggled with in the past, and where there may be gaps in your routine. More often than not, those gaps aren't about buying another product.
They're about the basics.
And one of the most overlooked basics is cleansing.
It sounds simple, but how you cleanse your skin—and when you cleanse it—can have a tremendous impact on how healthy your skin looks and feels.
If You're Only Going to Wash Once...
People are often surprised when I tell them this.
If you're only going to wash your face once each day...
Do it in the evening.
During the day, your skin collects sunscreen, sweat, oil, makeup, dirt, and environmental pollutants. Going to bed without properly removing all of that buildup means your skin spends the entire night sitting in everything it collected throughout the day.
Instead, I encourage my guests to think of their evening cleanse as washing the day away.
Your skin works hard for you.
It deserves to go to bed clean.
In the morning, a gentle rinse with water is often enough to remove any overnight skincare and refresh your skin before applying your daytime products.
When Should You Double Cleanse?
One question I hear often is whether everyone should double cleanse.
The answer is...
Not necessarily.
But if you wear a full face of makeup or multiple layers of sunscreen, I absolutely recommend it in the evening.
Think of it as a two-step process.
The first cleanse removes makeup, sunscreen, and surface debris. I like using a creamy or oil-based cleanser for this step because it easily breaks everything down.
The second cleanse is where you're actually cleansing your skin. A gel or foaming cleanser helps remove any remaining oil, sweat, and impurities while leaving your skin feeling fresh and clean.
Double cleansing isn't something I typically recommend in the morning because your skin simply hasn't accumulated the same amount of buildup overnight.
Don't Be Afraid to Use a Little Help
Another question I get asked is whether your hands are enough.
While your hands certainly play an important role, I personally like using a soft washcloth or even a silicone cleansing brush to help remove cleanser and residue more thoroughly.
Sometimes our hands alone don't completely remove makeup, sunscreen, or skincare products.
A little extra assistance can leave your skin feeling much cleaner without being harsh.
The goal isn't aggressive scrubbing.
It's thorough cleansing.
It's Not About More Products
One thing I've noticed over the years is that people often assume they need another serum or another moisturizer when their skin isn't looking its best.
Sometimes...
They simply need to cleanse better.
Healthy skin isn't about owning the most products.
It's about creating healthy skin that can actually absorb and benefit from the products you're already using.
A consistent cleansing routine creates the foundation for everything else in your skincare routine to work more effectively.
Small Habits Create Big Results
One of the philosophies we believe in at Nourish is that skincare doesn't have to be complicated.
The biggest improvements usually come from doing the simple things consistently.
Cleanse your skin every evening.
Exfoliate appropriately.
Wear sunscreen every day.
Stay consistent with professional treatments.
Those small habits add up to healthier, stronger skin over time.
Your skin doesn't need perfection.
It simply needs thoughtful care.
