hyperpigmentation

what is it?

Facial hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin conditions that affects millions around the world. It often manifests as spots or patches of skin that are darker than your natural skin tone. Hyperpigmentation can occur on the skin for several reasons and most often presents in the sun-exposed areas of the face and body. Facial hyperpigmentation can affect anyone, regardless of age or skin tone. Although this skin condition is cosmetic, it can impact one’s self-esteem. Thankfully, there are treatment options available.

What causes it?

There are several factors that can lead to hyperpigmentation:

UV EXPOSURE

UV light stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin as a protective response, leading to sunspots or age spots.

POST-INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION (PIH)

This type occurs after skin injury or inflammation, such as acne, eczema, or cuts. Inflammation triggers melanocytes to release excess melanin as the skin heals, resulting in dark spots.

HORMONAL CHANGES

Conditions like melasma are linked to hormonal fluctuations, particularly during pregnancy or when using oral contraceptives. These hormones can increase melanin production, leading to patches of hyperpigmentation, often on the face.

MEDICATIONS & CHEMICALS

Certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, and some cosmetic products can increase sensitivity to sunlight or directly cause pigmentation changes.
